German Book: Text und Musik bei John Dowland

Buch

John Dowland was born in 1563.
After many years of travelling across Europe he finally arrived at the Court of Christian IV in Denmark where he was appointed court lutenist and received a very good salary. He stayed there until 1606 when he returned to England where he finally hoped to obtain a post at the court of James I. But that was not to be the case until six years later.
He died in 1626 in London. In his lifetime he published  four Bookes of Songs or Ayres (1597, 1600, 1603, 1612) which bear witness to his reputation as the leading composer of this genre in Elizabethan England.

The book provides a close textual and musical analysis of Dowland’s secular vocal music published in his four Bookes of Songs or Ayres between 1597 and 1612 in late Renaissance England.  The thesis claims that the poetry, whose stylistic range varies from a seemingly conventional pastoral tradition to strong anti-petrarchan diction, bears strong evidence of an intellectual circle of courtiers outside the actual court of Elizabeth I. Special attention is being paid to the composer’s Lachrimae motive and its numerous quotations within these songs. The second part contains a complete and commented translation of Dowland’s lyrics into German.
